Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The BUS is a government grant scheme aimed at encouraging homeowners to replace their fossil fuel heating systems with renewable energy systems that will save them money and reduce their property's carbon emissions.

What is the Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The BUS has been operating since 2022 and offers subsidised grants to homeowners to help with the cost of sourcing and installing modern and energy efficient boilers in their properties.

This government-funded energy efficiency retrofit scheme is available to English and Welsh homeowners who currently use an oil, gas, electric, solid fuel or LPG heating system to heat their home. Properties must have a current Energy Performance Certificate and there must be no outstanding recommendations for cavity wall or loft insulation in order to be considered under this scheme.

Eligible applicants will receive funding towards the cost of purchasing and installing a low carbon heating solution such as an air source heat pump, a ground source heat pump or a biomass boiler.

The scheme will run until April 2028 and Enviro Energy is delighted to be an MCS certified installer and approved to inspect properties, make appropriate recommendations and conduct installations under this government grant scheme.

How Much Funding is Available?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant value was increased on the 21st September 2023 by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. Successful applicants can now receive up to £7,500 of grant funding towards the cost of purchasing and installing a ground source or air source heat pump, and up to £5,000 towards the cost of purchasing and installing a biomass boiler.

In total, £1.95Bn worth of grant funding is available to support the decarbonisation of heat in domestic buildings in England and Wales. With the help of this funding, many more homeowners will be able to upgrade their inefficient heating systems, replacing them with modern, renewable energy sources which will deliver lower energy bills and increased comfort.

Why Homeowners Should Consider Replacing Their Boiler

If your existing heating system is working well, you may not see the benefit of upgrading to a modern and low carbon heating system. However, if it is ageing, in a deteriorating condition or comes with crippling maintenance costs, you may consider that a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is the answer to your prayers.

Other than age-related degradation, there are several other reasons why you should consider replacing your fossil fuel heating system with one that is powered by renewable energy sources. The first is cost saving. Modern heating systems are more energy efficient, meaning that you use less energy for the same result, and therefore your annual energy bills are reduced.

Secondly, fossil fuel heating systems release harmful carbon dioxide into the environment, driving climate change, polluting our air and waterways and damaging human health and wildlife habitats. Swapping to a renewable energy heating source minimises carbon emissions and can improve the health of our population.

The UK government is committed to reducing carbon emissions and achieving Net Zero by 2050, an ambitious target that requires all of us to play our part. For some people, swapping to an energy supplier that sources their energy from 100% renewable sources is an achievable aim. For others, upgrading their heating system or installing photovoltaic solar panels or increasing their home's insulation enables them to make a significant contribution towards this challenge.
